Lolita fashion is an excellent way to add some fun into your wardrobe without sacrificing style or comfort. Here, we’ll look at the steps for pulling off a perfect lolita style and discuss the lolita culture in detail.
Lolita fashion is a subculture where girls and boys wear (usually) cute clothing inspired by Japanese manga and anime characters & culture. The term was coined in Japan during the 1950s and 1960s, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon. Today, the style is often associated with young women who enjoy dressing up in cute outfits.
Lolita fashion can be tricky to master since it involves finding the right pieces that suit your body type. It also requires lots of accessories to complete the look.
What is Sweet Lolita Fashion?
Sweet Lolita fashion is a subculture of lolita fashion that focuses on the aesthetic of sweet and cute, while maintaining the traditional elements of lolita. The style has its roots in Japan’s kawaii culture, but it is also influenced by Western pop culture (among others: Disney). In Japan, there are different types of sweet lolitas: “sweet moe” (“cute”) and “sweet japanese”. Depending on what part of the country you’re from, you may see one or both of these styles. A lot of people who wear sweet lolitas are obsessed with anime and manga.
The term ‘lolita’ was first used in Japan during the 1960s as a way to describe young girls wearing very short skirts and high heels. It was originally a derogatory term for Japanese women who were considered too feminine, although nowadays it’s mainly used as a compliment.
There are also other lolita fashion sub-genres like gothic lolita, punk lolita and country lolita.
Classic Lolita
Classic Lolita is a more sophisticated version of Lolita than the other styles. It is much more historical than the other styles. A-line skirts were very popular during this time period. Brown, wine red, sage greens and cornflower blues are the most popular colors. Florals are also popular, as well as checks, nature, tartans, and historical art.Lolitas love bright colors and vibrant patterns. Accessories are important because they help define your style. There are many different ways to coordinate outfits, including matching shoes and bags, coordinating accessories, and wearing complementary colors. If you’re not sure what to wear, try wearing something you normally wouldn’t wear. You’ll probably end up looking great!
Gothic Lolita
Gothic Lolita is a style of fashion that emphasizes dark colors, heavy makeup, and dramatic hairstyles This style is a fusion of lolitafashion and the Japanese goth culture of the 1990s.
Gothic Lolita fashion tends to be characterized by darker colors and more gothic themes. It’s usually more experimental. There are many popular colors including black, grey, navy, dark red, purple and white. Gothic architecture, crosses, bats, coffins and chandeliers are common motifs.
Gothic lolita accessories are more experimental than others. There are lots of different types of headwear, including rectangle headdresses, bonnet, bows, and even wide-brim hats. Shoe types vary greatly- Mary Janes, booties, and platform shoes are just some examples. Bags and pursues can be simple or shaped as coffins or bats, for example.
Gothic Lolita makeup can be dark and dramatic, but not necessarily black. Black is perfect for the eyes and lips. There’s no end to what goes well with a black dress.
Country Lolita
Punk Lolitas are a sub-style of lolitas that are inspired by western punk. They use similar motifs like tartan, deconstruction and chains. They also use safety pins, asymmetrical hemlines, rips, gomglets, buckles, and spiky heels. They are inspired by Vivienne Westwoods and her influence in the UK. Unlike other styles of Lolita, Punk Lolitas can consist of frilly dresses paired with cutsews, or a more delicate blouses with a tough skirt, and then accesorize with feminine accesories to lighten the look and give it a bit of edge. Print motifs are Crowns, butterflies, roses and playing cards suit, skulls, and grunge or slightly creepy cute characters.
Punk Lolita
Country Lolitas are a type of Lolita inspired by the vast open country and often, Victorian farms and ranches. It is often a mixture of classic, Sweet and Country styles. The Country Lolita Style is often marked by the addition of wicker or straw items like baskets or straw hats. It’s also common for straw hats or wicker handbags to be the only distinguishing features between Country and Classic or even Sweet Lolita. Grosgrain ribbons and food prints are popular with this style. Think Anne of Green gables or Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
How to dress like a Lolita Girl?
If you’re fascinated by the subculture, here’s where to go to buy the right clothes and accessories. If you’ve always wanted to wear a corset, but were afraid of what people would think, then this guide will give you confidence. Also, if you’d love to try dressing up as a Lolita, but aren’t sure where to start, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about getting dressed up and going out in fancy dress.
Step 1 – Know your Basics
Lolita is a fashion, and not a costume! So with any fashion style – it is up to you and your imagination what is ok and what you don’t like 🙂 we just want to give you some rough guidelines when you don’t know where to start!
Step 2 – Look for cute accessories
Look for cute items that match your outfit. Items such as pursues, hats, scarves and so on. Matching your accessories with the colours in your dress or skirt will help you create a cohesive look. But it doesn’t stop with fashion accessories – to add a little sweet loli to your everyday life you can go for phone accessories in pink and cute colors or cute room decor (like kawaii plushies) matching the sweet lolita style.

Step 3 – Mainly look for items with a "cute and sweet" feeling
You can still wear dark colours, but they’re usually used as an accent shade for accessories. Popular colors include mostly shades of pastel and colors like pink, saxe blue, white/creamy, pale yellow, mint greens and lavenders are very popular.
Step 4 – Choose from different types of headwear
You can match your dress with a bow or headdress, but coordinating colours and patterns can work just as well. Mini top hats look costume-y, so avoid them. Lolita is a fashion style, not a costume. Bows, headbands and clips are all popular choices. Headdresses are less popular but still quite common. Wigs are worn often by Lolitas but are not mandatory and you can style your hair or wear a wig if you wish.
Step 5 – Invest in a good quality blouse
Unless your dress is an OOP (one-piece) dress and has sleeves, then you will need to wear something under it. A blouse is usually worn with skirts as well, but not always. A dress without sleeves is called a jumper skirt and must be worn with a blouse. Sleeves vary from length to length and collar styles vary, but Lolita dresses are modest and your cleavage and shoulder areas should to be covered – but again, it is YOUR style and if you want to be a bit more sexy, go for it. White, cream, and ivory are good colours for blouses because they can be worn with more clothes than coloured ones. Coloured blouses are great too!
Step 6 – Look for a good petticoat
A petticoat is an undergarment worn by women to cover their underwear. The ideal sweet lolita silhouette has a bell shape, whether she wears a dress or a skirt The shape of the dress is achieved by the petticoat underneath the skirt. If a skirt has no room for enough petticoats to achieve this shape, then it’s usually inappropriate for the style. A Lolita skirt should not be shorter than 2″ above the knee. A petticoat is an essential undergarment for a Lolita, and a proper Lolita isn’t properly dressed without one. Bloomers are worn under the petticoat to provide extra modesty and protection from skin irritation. However, they are not required, and wearing shorts or bicycle shorts will suffice.
